Uganda Launches “Beera Ku Guard” Campaign to Boost Cybersecurity

Kampala, Uganda – The National Information Technology Authority, Uganda (NITA-U) has initiated a new nationwide campaign, “Beera Ku Guard” (Stay on Guard), to enhance public awareness about cybersecurity, data protection, and privacy. The campaign aims to empower citizens with the knowledge to protect themselves from online threats and understand their rights under the Data Protection and Privacy Act of 2019.

A Proactive Response to Rising Cybercrime

The initiative comes as Uganda faces a significant increase in cybercrime and data breaches. According to Arnold Mangeni, NITA-U’s Director for Information Security, the campaign’s goal is to “build a culture of cyber awareness” and enable citizens to make secure and informed decisions online. As the country’s internet usage grows, so do the associated digital risks, making public education a critical component of national security.

Multi-Platform Strategy for Widespread Reach

“Beera Ku Guard” will employ a diverse range of platforms to reach all segments of the population. The campaign will utilize:

  • Traditional media: radio and television.
  • Physical outreach: town hall meetings.
  • Digital channels: online events, webinars, and social media.

The core message will focus on four key areas:

  1. Financial Safety: Protecting money during online transactions and mobile banking.
  2. Child Safety: Shielding minors from harmful digital content.
  3. Business Security: Promoting cybersecurity practices for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
  4. Privacy Protection: Educating individuals on their personal data rights.

Cybersecurity as a Shared Responsibility

The campaign highlights that digital security is a collective effort, not solely the responsibility of the government or corporations. By turning citizens into the “first line of defense,” NITA-U aims to minimize the human errors that are often exploited in scams and breaches. This initiative is a crucial step in ensuring a safe and resilient digital ecosystem as Uganda continues its rapid digital transformation.
