Meta Partners with Safaricom to Land New Submarine Cable in Kenya

Meta has announced a strategic partnership with Safaricom PLC (NSE: SCOM) to bring its second high-capacity submarine cable to Kenya, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to advancing Africa’s digital transformation.

Through its subsidiary, Edge Network Services Limited, Meta has selected Safaricom as the official landing partner for the new undersea cable system linking Oman and Kenya. The cable is designed to provide faster, more resilient, and scalable internet connectivity to meet the continent’s growing data demands.

“This deal is a significant strategic milestone for us at Safaricom as we mark 25 years and signals our readiness to transition into a fully-fledged tech company in line with our Vision 2030 strategy,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom. “It positions us to meet the surging demand for high-capacity, low-latency connectivity which is critical for powering economic growth, cloud adoption, and digital innovation.”

The partnership comes as Safaricom accelerates its Vision 2030 journey to evolve beyond voice, data, and mobile money services toward becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company. The move also strengthens Kenya’s position as a regional digital hub, enhancing access to faster internet and supporting the growth of cloud services and emerging technologies.

The Under-Sea Cable System will be fully funded by Meta’s Edge Network Services. Licensed operators in Kenya and Oman will manage operations within their respective territorial waters, including all associated in-country infrastructure.

This collaboration builds on Meta’s ongoing investments in connectivity across Africa, aimed at expanding broadband access and driving digital inclusion, while positioning Safaricom at the forefront of next-generation network innovation on the continent.
