Google Phasing Out Gmailify and POP Email Fetching: What It Means for Users

Google has announced major changes to how Gmail interacts with third-party email accounts such as Outlook, Yahoo, and iCloud. The company will remove support for Gmailify and POP-based email fetching, affecting millions who rely on Gmail to manage multiple email addresses.

Features Being Discontinued

  1. Gmailify
Previously, Gmailify allowed users to link non-Google accounts to Gmail, enabling Gmail’s advanced features—like spam protection, inbox organization, and improved search—on Yahoo, Hotmail, or other accounts.
  2. POP-based Email Fetching
Gmail’s web interface allowed users to automatically pull emails from other accounts using the POP protocol. This feature will no longer be supported.

Timeline of Changes

  • Early 2026 (Q1): New users will no longer be able to set up Gmailify or POP-based email fetching.
  • Later in 2026: Existing users who have these features enabled will see them discontinued.

Options for Users

If you currently manage other email accounts via Gmail, you have alternatives to maintain seamless access:

  1. Use the Gmail Mobile App (Recommended)
You can continue adding third-party accounts via the Gmail app on Android, iPhone, or iPad. This method uses IMAP, a modern and secure protocol that Google continues to support.
  2. Set Up Automatic Forwarding (Web)
For those who prefer using Gmail’s web interface, configure “Automatic Forwarding” in your third-party email account (Yahoo, Outlook, etc.) to send incoming emails to Gmail.

What Remains Unchanged

  • Existing Emails: All previously imported emails will remain intact.
  • Third-party Email Clients: Apps like Outlook or Apple Mail can still access Gmail using POP or IMAP.
  • One-time Import: Users can still perform a one-time import of old emails and contacts; continuous syncing via POP is being discontinued.

Why the Change?

Google is retiring older, less secure protocols in favor of modern standards like IMAP and OAuth, which enhance security, synchronization, and cross-device access.

Implications for Data Governance

This change highlights the need for organizations and individuals to stay informed about email data management and security protocols. POP and Gmailify relied on legacy methods that posed security risks, while IMAP and OAuth offer better encryption and control. Users and IT teams should review their email workflows and ensure compliance with updated security standards.
