Kenya Convenes Inception Workshop to Kickstart Development of National AI Policy

Kenya has formally begun the journey toward establishing a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy, following a high-level inception workshop held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi’s Upper Hill district. The event brought together a wide spectrum of stakeholders from government, industry, academia, civil society, and the wider technology ecosystem.

As the country positions itself as a regional leader in digital innovation, the development of a national AI policy is expected to shape how Kenya adopts, regulates, and benefits from emerging AI technologies. For practitioners working in privacy, cybersecurity, data governance, and digital transformation, the policy is anticipated to significantly influence practice, compliance, and innovation in the coming years.

Participants noted the importance of contributing meaningfully to the policy at this early stage. One speaker captured the sentiment clearly with a reminder that “if you are not at the table, you are most likely on the menu.” This call to participate resonated strongly across the room, particularly for professionals whose work intersects with responsible technology and data protection.

Data Governance Africa community was well represented at the workshop. The discussions explored ethics, human rights, data governance, infrastructure, innovation, research, and the emerging regulatory landscape. Their contributions helped shape the perspectives that will inform the policy drafting process.

The Ministry will consolidate insights from the breakout sessions through the panel secretariat and share them as part of the broader national consultation roadmap. Data Governance Africa will provide updates as more information becomes available, including feedback from the thematic panels and next steps in the policy development process.

Kenya’s National AI Policy is expected to play a central role in guiding responsible AI adoption, strengthening digital governance, and ensuring that the country’s innovation agenda is anchored in safety, transparency, and inclusivity.
