In a major step toward inclusivity and citizen awareness, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, announced via his LinkedIn post that the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) has been successfully translated into Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba — the country’s three major indigenous languages.
The announcement highlights a partnership between the NDPC and Meta Inc., aimed at ensuring that data protection awareness reaches all Nigerians, regardless of literacy level or language background.
Bringing Privacy to the People
In his post, Dr. Olatunji explained that the translation initiative reflects the Commission’s commitment to making privacy a national conversation. The Yoruba version was unveiled in Ikeja, Lagos, during a community-driven event hosted by Hon. Akeem Olalekan Dauda of Ikeja Local Government.
The unveiling was led by His Majesty Oba (Dr) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, and attended by several dignitaries and community leaders including:
- Oba Suleiman Owolabi Ogun-Oloko, Olu of Iwaya-Yaba Kingdom
- Oba (Engr.) Sulaimon Adekunle Bamgbade, Olofin of Isheri and Adimula of Awori Kingdoms
Grassroots engagement was central to the event, which also brought together local government officials, youth groups, corps members, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, and market women. One participant described the move as a “commendable effort of the Commission to bring privacy to the grassroots.”
Policy Alignment and National Impact
Dr. Olatunji noted that this effort aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its focus on youth empowerment through digital innovation. Translating the law into indigenous languages, he said, ensures that “every Nigerian can understand and own their data protection rights.”
Africa’s Growing Commitment to Accessible Privacy
Nigeria’s effort places it alongside other African countries integrating language inclusion into data protection governance.
While Rwanda and South Africa integrate translation through constitutional or statutory mandates, Nigeria’s approach is distinct for its collaborative, awareness-driven implementation led by the NDPC and supported by Meta.
Setting a Continental Standard
Dr. Olatunji’s announcement represents a pioneering model of digital inclusion and corporate–government collaboration. It underscores the belief that data protection must be understood by every citizen, not only by policymakers or legal experts.
By making the law linguistically accessible, Nigeria is not just enforcing compliance—it is democratizing digital rights.
